Friday Fragrance - Prada Perfumes' Candy

Over the past year, I’ve tested and worn over scores of fragrances, from small indie company perfume oils to high-end perfumes from the great perfume houses. Only a very small handful of perfumes have stood out as truly unique and special, and one of them is Prada’s Candy. Prada’s original, signature scent has been among my favorites for years, so last year, when I learned that Prada Perfume had released a new fragrance named Candy, I was instantly intrigued.  I adore sweet fragrances, but don’t want to smell like a Jolly Rancher or like I did when I was in junior high, when I wore Love’s Baby Soft. One thing I knew for sure was that a great perfume house like Prada wouldn’t create a jejune scent for teenagers; rather, Prada’s version of a candy fragrance would undoubtedly emanate classiness, sophistication, and maturity.

Candy is Excessive: The pure indulgence and enjoyment of Prada Candy lies in its excess. Prada Candy is a fragrance with a novel olfactory balance combining exceptionally high-quality ingredients in excessive proportions. Magnified by White Musks, noble Benzoin comes together with a modern Caramel accord to give the fragrance a truly unique signature.

A Cocktail of Musks: A refined veil of timeless Musks drapes the Benzoin and Caramel notes, revealing an irreverent combination defying convention. The silky, powdery texture of the Musks brings a sophisticated and elegant character to the fragrance.

An Overdose of Laotion Benzoin: Benzoin is a resin collected from the styrax tree, grown in the forests of Laos. Found here in an unprecedented concentration of 12%, it is addictive and sensual, with warm, wet, sweet, balsamy notes evoking delicately vanilla-scented honey.

An Explosion of Caramel: In an unexpected Prada twist, a synthetic pop accord of Caramel is playfully jostling with the natural note of Benzoin. This Caramel accord is delicious and nostalgic, joyfully feminine and sweetly addictive.

Prada Candy is an oriental vanilla fragrance that is sophisticated and mature, without sacrificing vibrance and liveliness.  Most women I know who like sweet scents are familiar with Aquolina Pink Sugar; Prada Candy has a similarly warm, caramel-vanilla scent, but without the overly-sweet sugariness of Pink Sugar. While Prada Candy is certainly sweet, it has a rich warmth and depth that tempers the sweetness. The fragrance opens with a top note of ethereal musk and a drizzle of caramel that weaves a ribbon of warm, butterscotch-like booziness through the fragrance. As the scent dries down, the slightly powdery warmth of the benzoin provides the fragrance with its depth and rich, resinous sweetness. A thin veil of soft vanilla envelopes the overall scent. Prada Candy is fun and flirty, but in a grounded, level-headed sort of way. It melds with my skin chemistry perfectly, almost as if it’s an extension of my skin’s own natural scent, and, ons me, has an average wear time. Prada Candy is perfect for the office, for a romantic evening out, and for every day wear. It’s a simple and lovely scent that is pleasant and uplifting.

Prada Candy retails for $88.50 for a 50 ml / 1.7 oz bottle at Forget Flowers.
