Review & Swatches: Milani Bella Eyes Gel Powder Eyeshadow

I purchased this.

Milani Cosmetics recently released a new product called Bella Eyes Gel Powder Eyeshadow. It's not on their website yet, which I think is kind of strange, but they've started showing up in stores that sell Milani. The products appear to be permanent, as there is nothing on the display or the product packaging that indicates they're limited edition. There are two displays: one has all 19 shadows, and the other is a smaller display with only 12 of the shadows. [EDIT 7/4/14: there are apparently 30 colors in total to be released sometime in July 2014.) There is only one store remotely convenient to wear I live that carries Milani, and it had the 12-color display. I ended up nabbing eight of them. I'm still on the hunt for the larger display (and waiting for them to be released on Milani's website), as I've seen photos out there in Blogger-land and YouTube-land of all 19 colors, and there are 7 or 8 more that I'm jonesing for.

The eight shades I picked up are Bella Caffé, Bella Espresso, Bella Gold, Bella Ivory, Bella Pink, Bella Purple, Bella Sand, and Bella Teal.

As always, click on the photos to see a larger image.

The eyeshadows are raised in the pans and each has a little dip in the center, which you can see best in this next photo of Bella Gold.

I think the "Gel Powder" moniker is interesting. When I think "gel," I think of a cream, like gel eyeliner or Maybelline's Color Tattoo eyeshadows. Milani's Gel Powder eyeshadows don't have a cream consistency at all. I've seen them described online as more similar to a baked eyeshadow consistency, but I don't think that's accurate either. They're unlike anything else I own, and they're not a cream like a gel eyeliner or Color Tattoo, but neither are they hard like a baked eyeshadow. They're not a "bouncy" product, but they feel soft and silky. The colors are highly pigmented, and they glide on smoothly and blend beautifully.

I swatched each of the eight eyeshadows over Too Faced Shadow Insurance. This first set is taken in direct sunlight.

My favorite colors from the eight that I have are Bella Gold (a gorgeous warm gold that looks beautiful with my skin tone), Bella Caffé (an absolutely perfect crease/brow transition color for my skin tone), Bella Sand (a warm, sandy, neutral shade with a very slightly peachy undertone), and Bella Teal (a stunning, bright, teal blue). I used all four of those plus Bella Espresso in a look yesterday, which I'll post soon. I like all of the shades I own , however, and am looking forward to pairing Bella Pink with Bella Purple, Bella Gold with Bella Teal, Bella Teal with Bella Espresso, and I think Bella Ivory will make a beautiful highlight shade for many looks.

Overall, I'm very happy with these eyeshadows. They are highly pigmented, have very little fallout, blend beautifully, and last all day. They don't apply quite as opaquely as I'd hoped, and  to really take advantage of their potential for vibrancy, I think they need to be applied over a sticky, colored base.

I picked these up at Walgreens, where the non-sale price for them is $3.99/each.

Have you seen these in any stores near you? Are there any colors that you're thinking of getting?
