Review: Lionesse Beauty Bar Makeup Products

PR Samples.

I recently had the opportunity to try several cosmetics from Lionesse Beauty Bar. Lionesse is a salon in Arcadia, California, that provides hair and makeup services. They also offer their products in an online store.  Lionesse sent me the following products to test and review:

Please note that while I did receive this products for consideration, all opinions are my own.

Top row, L-R: Lionesse Moisturizing Primer, Lionesse Mousse Foundation
Bottom row, L-R: Lionesse Eye Shimmer, Lionesse Blush, Lionesse Eye Shimmer

Now, let's get on with the review! I am reviewing four products, so grab a cup of coffee or tea and a snack and settle on in to read my thoughts about these products.

Left: Lionesse Moisturizing Primer
Right: Lionesse Mousse Foundation

First up are the Lionesse Moisturizing Primer and Lionesse Mousse Foundation.

Both of these products are packaged in jars that are neatly placed in some of the nicest packaging I've encountered. The boxes they come in are really high quality and thoroughly protect the product during shipping.

Here is Lionesse's description of this product:
Lionesse Moisturizing Primer is the perfect way to achieve flawless looking skin. Prevent your foundation from fading with this formula, while achieving smooth-looking skin. The Lionesse Moisturizing Primer is infused with Shea Butter for added elasticity, giving you a younger look without concern of clogging the pores. Shea Butter is known to have healing properties and amazing moisturizing capabilities. The Shea Butter will smooth out the surface of the skin, allowing foundation to glide on smoothly and evenly, extending the wear of your foundation, while giving your skin a flawless look.
Packaging
This product comes in a jar with a screw-top lid and an air seal. It is packaged securely inside of a flip-top box. The packaging is high quality, which gives the impression that what is inside is a high-quality product.

Shade/Color/Scent
This product looks like a white cream in the jar and it applies invisibly on the skin.  It has a perfumey scent about it that I found a bit surprising initially, but I kind of like it. It's not too strong for me, but could be off-putting to someone with scent sensitivities.

Texture/Application
This product is both a moisturizer and a primer, show I wasn't sure how my skin wouldn't react to it, since my skin is incredibly sensitive about moisturizers. Immediately upon application, my skin feels fully hydrated, soft, silky, and smooth. Very little of this product is required to cover my face. It helps keep my makeup on all day and gives me a smoother surface to work with.

Cost Comparison
The cost of this primer is $125 for a 1.76 oz/50 ml jar. That seemed pretty high to me, so I decided to compare it against a few other primers that I have used and really like. The Lionesse Moisturizing Primer came in as the most costly per milliliter.

  • Lionesse Moisturizing Primer - $125 per 1.76 oz/50 ml jar. This breaks down to $2.50 per ml.
  • Illamasqua Matte Veil Primer/Illamasqua Hydra Veil Primer breaks down to approximately $1.60 per ml (it is sold in British pounds, so the exact U.S. dollar price will vary depending on the daily conversion rate)
  • Smashbox Iconic Photo Finish Foundation Primer breaks down to $1.20 per ml.
  • Makeup Forever HD Microperfecting Primer breaks down to $1.20 per ml.
  • MAC Prep + Prime Skin breaks down to $1.00 per ml.

What I Like The Most/Like The Least:
What I like the most is that Lionesse Moisturizing Primer is a 2-in-1 product that can help save a bit of time in the morning. Rather than applying a moisturizer, then applying a primer on top of that, you're just applying one product.

What I like the least is two-fold. First, I dislike the price because it is significantly higher than other quality primers. The cost is likely due to the fact that it is two products in one. Still, I would like to see a 2-in-1 product that is closer to the cost of other primers that serve only one function.

Second, I have extremely oily skin, and this product makes my skin oilier than it is when I use mattifying products. As a result, I ended up with some blemishes over the two weeks that I used this product daily, even though I typically have clear skin. When I'm wearing a mattifying primer (like Illamasqua's Matte Veil), I can go for days on end without blotting my face or doing powder touch-ups. When I'm wearing the Lionesse Moisturizing Primer, I have to use one blotting sheet about every 3-4 hours, followed each time by a light dusting of powder. I think this product could be excellent for someone with dry or normal skin, but it doesn't seem to be as effective for those of us with combo/oily skin. I would like to see Lionesse release a similar product for oily skin.

Left: Lionesse Moisturizing Primer
Right: Lionesse Mousse Foundation in "Peach"

Here is Lionesse's description of this product:
This creamy foundation delivers full coverage and long-lasting effects without shine or greasiness. Get perfect looking skin instantly with this lightweight mousse foundation.

Prior to trying Lionesse Mousse Foundation, I had never tried a mousse foundation before, so I was very curious about it. In brief: I love it!

Packaging
This product comes in a jar with a screw-top lid and an air seal. It is packaged securely inside of a flip-top box. The packaging is high quality, which gives the impression that what is inside is a high-quality product.

Shade/Color/Scent
I received the Lionesse Mousse Foundation in the shade "Peach." As it turns out, it's an exact match for my light/medium warm-toned skin (MAC NC25/NC30), which is quite surprising, as I've struggled for years to find a good foundation match for my skin that is neither too pink nor too yellow. There is no scent that I can discern.

Texture/Application:
This  mousse foundation has a very nice texture. It's smooth and sort of "squishy," as you'd expect from something with the name "mousse" in it. I only need to use an amount about the size of half of a hazelnut to completely cover my face. This amount gives me fairly light coverage; it events out my overall skin tone, but does not provide enough pigmentation to cover any blemishes or redness. If I let the mousse foundation set and then go back with a slightly smaller amount, applying it on top of the first coat, it builds up beautifully and gives me the extra coverage I prefer, but does not look heavy or cakey. I have applied it with my fingertips, with a foundation brush, and with a BeautyBlender. No matter which application method I've used, it goes on smoothly and evenly, although I do prefer the absolutely flawless finish that the BeautyBlender gives it.

Lionesse Mousse Foundation in "Peach" on my face in the left half of this image.
You can see how it evens out my skin tone. It even provides a hint of coverage for my dark, under-eye circles.
In the right half of this image, my skin is bare naked.

Lionesse Mousse Foundation in "Peach" over my entire face.

Cost Comparison
The Lionesse Mousse Foundation is $75 for a 1 oz (30 g) jar. This is equivalent to $2.50 per gram. I couldn't do an apples-to-apples comparison, as I could only find one other mousse foundation to compare it to. Below, I've included that one other mousse foundation in my price breakdown, along with a few other popular cream and liquid foundations.

  • Illamasqua Cream Foundation breaks down to ~$5.19/g.
  • MAC Studio tech Foundation breaks down to $3.20/g.
  • Marc Jacobs Marvelous Mousse Foundation breaks down to $3.07/g.
  • Lionesse Mousse Foundation breaks down to $2.50/g.
  • Illamasqua Skin Base breaks down to $1.71/ml.
  • MAC Mineralize Moisture Foundation breaks down to $1.17/ml.

Lionesse Mousse Foundation is in the lower-mid-range of the various foundations I considered.

What I Like The Most/Like The Least:
I like two things in particular about the Lionesse Mousse Foundation. First, it looks completely natural and blends out perfectly with the color of my neck and ears. It covers my skin without looking like I'm wearing a ton of makeup. It's a "my skin but WOW!" look. Second, it's long-wearing. If I apply it to my face at 7:00 a.m., when I get home from work around 6:00 p.m., the makeup has not budged and my face still looks fresh and flawless.

What I like the least is that I have to build up this foundation on my skin, applying two layers to achieve the amount of coverage that I like.

Here is Lionesse's description of this product:
Give those cheeks a pop of color! This Mineral Loose Blush will give your face a natural flush and protect your skin from the sun's harmful UV rays with Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxides. Perfect for everyday wear.
Let me start off by saying that I'm really, really picky about blush. While I have countless numbers of eyeshadows, mascaras, eyeliners, lipsticks, foundations, and so forth, I have relatively few blushes, and even fewer that I use regularly. I am picky about both shades and finishes, and it's rare that I like a blush, much less fall in love with a flush. I typically pick from somewhere between 3-5 blushes that I tend to rotate among. The point is, the bar I've set for blushes is really high.

Lionesse Blush's outside packaging

Lionesse Blush's outside packaging shows the color and list of ingredients.

Packaging
This product comes in a jar with a screw-top lid and a sifter, and that is packed inside of a sturdy cardboard box. The sifter has a seal over it, although in my case, the seal had come loose, so there was loose powder all over inside the jar when I opened it. Fortunately, Lionesse shrink wraps all of their loose mineral products, so even if the lid would have come loose on my jar, none of the loose mineral product would have leaked out onto anything else in the larger package during shipping. I like that there is dual protection to avoid getting powder everywhere.

Lionesse Blush in "Rose" in the jar

Shade/Color
I received the Lionesse Blush in "Rose." When I first swatched it on the back of my hand, I thought it was pretty, but probably too light for my skin tone, and it seemed to have far too many big sparkles for my liking. However, when I used it on my cheeks (on top of the Lionesse Primer and Lionesse Mousse Foundation), I really liked how smoothly and evenly it applied, and I found the color was actually not too light for me. In fact, it's the perfect rose shade of pink. And the sparkle? It's not too much after all. While I see a hint of glimmer on my cheeks, I don't see full on glittery sparkle, which is nice.

Lionesse Blush in "Rose" - swatched heavily on the left and blended out on the right

Texture/Application
This is a loose, mineral blush. I don't typically prefer loose blushes, as I find they can get messy and often apply too heavily or I have difficultly blending them out. The formula of this blush is exquisite. It feels like silk as I apply it, and it goes on smoothly and evenly. I have no trouble getting the powder exactly where I want it on my cheeks. As the last steps in my makeup routine, I always set my blush with a touch of powder, followed by setting spray. Applied this way, this blush lasts a good 12+ hours. I actually really like this blush and am going to get a lot of use out of it.

Lionesse Blush in "Rose" on my cheeks

Cost Comparison
The Lionesse Blush is $40 for a huge 0.5 oz (15 g) jar. This is equivalent to $2.67 per gram. There aren't very many big-name companies out there who make loose, mineral blushes, so I compared this blush with a couple of loose, mineral blushes, a pressed blush that I really like, and a loose pigment that could be used for blush.

  • Bare Minerals Blush breaks down to $22.35 per gram (!!!! Yes, seriously!!!!)
  • Smashbox Halo Long Wear Blush breaks down to $14 per gram
  • Illamasqua Pressed Powder Blush breaks down to ~$7.63 per gram
  • Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Pure Cosmetic Pigment breaks down to $5.60 per gram
  • Lionesse Blush breaks down to $2.67 per gram.

Lionesse Blush is by far the most economical of all of the blushes I considered.

What I Like The Most/Like The Least:
What I like the most about Lionesse Blush is how it goes on like silk, and how natural it looks on my skin. I also really like how cost-effective it is

What I like the least about this blush is that it's a loose powder blush. As a matter of personal preference only, I would reach for it more often if it were a pressed blush.

There is no product description on the website.

I love eye shadow, and I really love loose eye shadows, so I was super excited to try these babies.

Lionesse Eye Shimmers packaging

Packaging
This product comes in a jar with a screw-top lid and a sifter. Each jar is individually shrink-wrapped for extra protection from the loose powder leaking out of the packaging.

(L: SH-17; R: SH-12)

The insides of the jars, once the seals have been removed from the sifters.
(L: SH-17; R: SH-12)

Shade/Color:
I received these loose eye shadows in shades SH-12, which is a mid-tone gold, and SH-17, which is a royal purple. The colors are not particularly complex, but are very good, basic shades. The finish is what I would call a satin finish. They have a nice level of soft shimmer, but there is very little actual sparkle.

Blurry photo of Lionesse Eye Shimmer swatches to show the light amount of sparkle.
L-R: SH-17, SH-12

Texture/Application:
The Lionesse Eye Shimmers are loose, mineral eye shadows. The formula is quite nice--the eye shadows apply smoothly and evenly, and they blend easily. They are heavily pigmented, and not much is required for full coverage. As with most loose eye shadows, they apply best over a sticky base on top of eyelid primer, which not only helps them last all day, but brings out the richness of their tone, as well.

A look I created using Lionesse Eye Shimmers in SH-12 (lid) and SH-17 (crease and lower lash line)

Cost Comparison
The Lionesse Eye Shimmers are $15 for each jar, which contains 0.9 oz/2.5 grams of product. This breaks down to an even $6 per gram.

  • Illamasqua Pure Pigments break down to $20.26 per gram
  • Bare Minerals Eyecolor breaks down to $16.47 per gram
  • Lionesse Eye Shimmers break down to $6 per gram
  • Makeup Geek Pigments break down to $4.66 per gram
  • MAC Pigments break down to $4.00 and $4.66 per gram (depending on size of jar)

The Lionesse Eye Shimmers are a high quality product for a very reasonable cost.

What I Like The Most/Like The Least:
What I like the most about the Lionesse Eye Shimmers are the pretty colors, the ease of application, and the quality formula. They are beautiful colors, apply easily, and blend like butter.

The Lionesse website is missing a whole lot of vital information from it's website that would strongly affect my desire to purchase these Eye Shimmers. It does not list a product description, there are no shade descriptions, no swatches, no jar sizes/amounts listed, and most importantly, the website does not list any ingredients. The product packaging has all of the size/amoung/ingredient information, but from the perspective of a consumer who would be purchasing online, I would feel like I wouldn't know exactly what I'm getting. I'd know the price and approximate color from the photo, but wouldn't know how much paying for, and more importantly, if I had sensitivities to certain ingredients, I wouldn't know until I received my order if this product contained any of those ingredients. I would be likely not to purchase based on what little information is provided online.

OVERALL OPINION

I really like the range of makeup products that Lionesse offers. They offer foundation shades in several shades that seems to cover anyone with light skin to deeper skin tones. I know quite a few women with extremely fair, porcelain skin, and they would not find a shade for their extremely fair skin. There are only three shades of blush available, but they appear to be created with various skin tones in mind. The Eye Shimmers come in a nice selection of basic colors, which would cover the eye shadow color needs of the average cosmetics consumer. The only product I didn't care for is the Moisturizing Primer because it doesn't work well with my oily skin; however, I think people with dry to normal skin might really appreciate its moisturizing properties.

I wish the Lionesse website were more thorough about advertising some of the great qualities of this brand. For example, nowhere on any of the product listings did I see anything indicating that the products are paraben-free. Even though the product packaging declares the products to be cruelty-free, I couldn't find that information on the website--and I know that would be a huge selling point with a number of cruelty-free cosmetics consumers. I would like to see more information on the website with shade/tone descriptions for the colored products, including skin swatches, and also information regarding product size and amounts.

Overall, I think the Lionesse products that I received are excellent quality. I initially balked at the prices when I researched the products on the website, but once I broke down the cost per unit of measure, I found that three of the four products I tried were quite reasonable when compared to similar products.

I'm definitely glad I got to try the range of Lionesse cosmetics, and I look forward to seeing if they expand the range, and trying more products.

Here I am, wearing the Lionesse Moisturizing Primer, Lionesse Mousse Foundation, Lionesse Blush, and both Lionesse Eye Shimmers. Now I just need to do something with my hair, and I'm ready to go!
What do you think of these Lionesse Beauty Bar cosmetics? Are there any that you would like to try?

  1. Excellent review! The products look nice. Too rich for my blood but nice nontheless lol. The blush looks like a beautiful everyday color; from the photos it reminds me of Darling Girl's blush in Neon Trees which is my everyday blush. It's hard to find blushes that are light enough for very pale skin, in my opinion. Most of the blushes I own are too dark for casual everyday wear. That purple eyeshadow swatch is INTENSE! Love the eye look you did, so pretty. Thanks for the review!

  4. Loved the review, Sam! I'm most curious about the mousse foundation. I think that's the only 'medium' of foundation I have not used. Years back I remember Maybelline releasing mousse blushes, which I still use on occasion. The texture is very interesting. Made a mental note to try out Illamasqua's Matte Veil, as well!
